Smells from the kitchen

A lingering smell has been creeping down the hallway of my typical 4-bedroom college apartment. Normally the only smells I can ever conjure coming from down the hallway is either 1. the smell of stale beer after a Thursday/Friday or Saturday night or 2. The smell of maryjane that seems to protrude from the room-mates room at a minimum of every 3 hours, but that isn’t it either. The smell is first-class, which is amazing to be coming from the place where I live with 3 other livestock. Taking a deep sniff I can almost experience the moment. Holidays at home. The kind of smell when you wake up thanksgiving morning and can taste what is for the feast before opening your bloodshot eyes. This aroma lifts me like bugs bunny down the hall, around the corner and up the stairs to the kitchen. The smell is so strong my mouth begins to water like Niagara. Slurping up extra saliva my feet finally touch down on the brisk kitchen floor and I’m quickly being snapped at to get ready and come help. I quickly do as I’m told and start preparing. Taking a taste of this, a smell of that, and a sip of something else. Soon enough family arrives with a sigh of relief, for now I’m off the hook on my cooking duties. Family friends arrive soon after and the warm ginger colored room starts to gleam with laughers and howl from stories of the past year. Now we carry on to stuffing ourselves to the point of cardiac arrest. After feasting we recline and I notice everyone’s cheeks have now turned a faint red from the warmth of good food and good company. There is now no one without a smile on their face. The giggles finally die down and the bubbling of coffee sounds with the smell of tea and fresh homemade pies. Slowly everyone departs but not without families becoming closer and good friends become better ones.

-I’m off to find that smell
